The Uesugi Clan and the World of Provincial Maps

Yonezawa City Uesugi Museum
Finished
During the Edo period, a variety of maps were crafted for different purposes, such as road maps, village maps, and town maps. A notable type was the "Kuni-ezu" (provincial maps), which the Edo shogunate oversaw and used in policy decisions. The shogunate ordered feudal domains to submit these provincial maps and land registers multiple times, reflecting their desire for nationwide control and prestige. The creation of these maps was deeply tied to the political and social context of the era, highlighting their historical and political significance.

The exhibition focuses on provincial maps from the Yonezawa domain, offering insights into the shogunate's map compilation process. These maps, particularly those of the Yonezawa region under the Uesugi clan's rule, provide unique perspectives on the era, including different place names and color schemes compared to contemporary maps.
