In 1985, Min Tanaka, a dancer who yearned for the essential and close relationship between the body, labor, and nature, moved with his friends to Hakushu, Yamanashi Prefecture, and started a farm. In 1988, Tanaka and his friends launched the "Hakushu Summer Festival." During the bubble economy and accelerating urban concentration, people from all over the world gathered for the four-day festival in Hakushu, located on the edge of the Fossa Magna, transcending the dichotomy between urban and rural areas and exploring new cultures and ways of life. Eventually, it evolved into "Art Camp Hakushu" (1993-99) and "Dance Hakushu" (2001-10), which focused on the process of living and creation. Even today, "Hakushu" is talked about like a legend and lives on in people's hearts. What did performers, artists, architects, musicians, cultural figures, and many young people and children experience there? This exhibition attempts to illuminate "Hakushu" through a vast archive of materials, photographs, videos, publications, and tribute works by the artists who participated in this rare outdoor art project.
