The Story of Indigo

Kurume City Art Museum
Finished
Indigo has long been cherished in Japan, associated with various dyeing and weaving techniques, and used as a dye for clothing and other items. This exhibition showcases the breadth and diverse allure of indigo dyeing culture, starting with Edo-period court attire and bathrobes, continuing through intricately patterned yukata created using techniques such as long-board stencil dyeing, shibori, and chusen, and including Kurume kasuri from the Chikugo region, woven with threads dyed in indigo and white to form diverse patterns. Additionally, the exhibition explores the "story" of indigo as it evolves, featuring contemporary artists and designers who blend tradition with innovation and works created by returning to ancient Japanese indigo dyeing techniques.
