The Radiance of Silk, The Art of Embroidery: Embroidered Paintings of Homecoming

Kiyomizu Sannenzaka Museum
Finished
As the Meiji era began, Japanese dyed and woven goods found a market as interior decorations, with frames and screens resembling paintings being actively produced and exported overseas. Departing from traditional clothing and daily goods, these dyed and woven products, such as embroidered paintings and velvet yuzen, were called fine art textiles. They were created by Kyoto kimono merchants such as Sozaemon Nishimura of Sensō and Shinshichi Iida of Takashimaya, based on designs by Japanese painters or foreign oil paintings. Particularly, embroidered paintings, with their shimmering silk threads layered intricately and employing various embroidery techniques, sometimes evoke a realism that surpasses traditional painting for the viewer.

This exhibition will showcase exquisite examples and previously unreleased works of embroidered paintings, along with velvet yuzen that adorned the same era. Born in Kyoto and returning to the city after the passage of time, these masterpieces of fine art textiles are not to be missed.
