Artists

Tomitaro Makino
Dr. Tomitaro Makino is the "godfather" of more than 1,500 plant species found in Japan. Motivated by his dream of knowing all the plants of Japan and his pure love of plants, he laid the foundation of modern botany in Japan and continued his diligent work of documenting plants throughout his life.

This exhibition explains the role and value of specimens as basic materials for botanical research through Dr. Makino's authenticated specimens and other materials.

Visitors are also invited to learn about the world of plants as seen by Dr. Makino, the model for the main character in the NHK TV series “Ranman."
