The Magic North: Art from Norway, Sweden and Finland

Matsumoto City Museum of Art
Finished
This exhibition marks the first comprehensive display in Japan of Nordic paintings from the late 19th to early 20th centuries, focusing on the mystical aspects found in Nordic nature and mythology. Drawing from collections held by national museums in Norway, Sweden, and Finland, the exhibition highlights the rising interest among Nordic painters in their homeland's nature, history, and culture against the backdrop of increasing nationalism.

During the 19th century, Nordic artists, who had previously drawn inspiration from art in continental countries like France and Germany, gradually turned their attention to their own country's landscapes shaped by harsh climates, as well as the myths and folklore handed down through generations. Additionally, the evolving urban landscapes brought about by modernization were depicted fantastically by these artists, leading to the flourishing of a unique Nordic painting style. The period around 1900 is particularly noted as the golden age of Nordic art, with painters like Edvard Munch from Norway making significant contributions.

Through approximately 70 carefully selected and valuable artworks, visitors are invited to explore the lesser-known charm of Nordic art in this exhibition.
