Yoshitoshi Tsukioka
Yoshitoshi Tsukioka (1839-1892) was an artist who, while inheriting the free-thinking creativity of his master, Utagawa Kuniyoshi, also incorporated the realism of Western painting. He made a lasting impact on the history of ukiyo-e with his powerful and bold compositions that captured moments filled with stillness and tension. Though Tsukioka is well-known for his "bloody prints," his works span a wide range of genres, including historical paintings, warrior prints, genre scenes, and bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women).

This exhibition presents approximately 150 important works from Tsukioka's diverse oeuvre, including masterpieces like "New Forms of Thirty-Six Ghosts," which exemplifies his skill in depicting yokai (supernatural creatures); "New Selection of Eastern Brocade Pictures," which showcases his pursuit of realism; "Thirty-Two Aspects of Customs and Manners," which hints at the beauty of modern Japanese painting; and "One Hundred Aspects of the Moon," a representative work from his later years. Please enjoy the art of this genius ukiyo-e master, who reflected the changing times from the late Edo period to the Meiji era and influenced modern and contemporary Japanese painting.
