Hokusai Katsushika, Hiroshige Utagawa, Kuniyoshi Utagawa et al.
Ukiyo-e was created in the Edo period (1603-1867) and continues to attract much attention in Japan and abroad. While multicolor woodblock-printed nishiki-e are woodblock prints produced in large quantities, nikuhitsuga ukiyo-e are rare one-of-a-kind works that were painstakingly created by ukiyo-e artists who directly hand-painted them.

Ukiyo-e works are mainly portrayals of beautiful women, and various female figures were depicted by the leading artists of each period. The painters' personalities and skills can be directly felt in their careful depictions of women's facial features, kimono patterns, and individual strands of hair.

This exhibition features 111 works selected from the Hikari Museum's collection of ukiyo-e prints in Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture. Through the works of Hokusai Katsushika, Hiroshige Utagawa, Kuniyoshi Utagawa, and other ukiyo-e artists and their pupils, the exhibition introduces the flow of ukiyo-e art from the mid-Edo period to the Meiji period (1868-1912).
