The Golden Age of Entertainment Films: European-Japanese Film Exchange

Instituto Cervantes Tokyo
Finished
The exchange between Europe and Japan in the 20th century through cinema is a clear example of the fascination between the West and Japan at that time.

Thanks to the enthusiastic efforts of directors, producers, and technical staff, the movie screens of the time were home to radioactive monsters, spaceships, superheroes with bizarre identities, modern-day samurai, and ancient Greek mythology with an Asian twist. After the end of World War II, entertainment films (fantasy, adventure, horror, science fiction, etc.) became popular while international film festivals began to produce films on a large scale. These two genres gave rise to several films that earned each other extraordinary reputations.

This exhibition, curated by film critic and genre expert Daniel Aguilar, will showcase Japanese entertainment film material printed in European countries (mainly Spain) between 1954 and 1979, as well as European entertainment film material released in Japan during the same period, enthusiast posters, catalogs, and other materials.
