The Gaze of Realism - Postwar Figurative Art and Abstract Art

Okazaki Mindscape Museum
Finished
The term "realism" in the context of art has been translated into Japanese as "shajitsu-shugi," which is often understood as representing a form of naturalistic or representational art. However, realism, as an artistic concept, does not strictly refer only to figurative representation but also encompasses abstract expressions that explore reality while seeking inner artistic qualities.

This exhibition seeks to interpret postwar figurative and abstract art through the key term "realism." In the realm of figurative art, the focus is primarily on the group "Witnesses of the Times," in which artists like Bernard Buffet participated. For abstract art, it explores the avant-garde art movement "Art Informel," which sought formlessness, and the "Concrete Art Association" related to this movement. Additionally, it introduces the influence of Surrealism on abstract expressionist painters. The exhibition also provides an overview of the aspects of Japanese art that have developed independently while being influenced by Western art movements.
