The development of contemporary art in Japan is unparalleled in Asia and has evolved in its unique way since the end of World War II. As the first exhibition of our collection, Ichion Contemporary presents a part of the vast and rare cultural assets which make up Japanese contemporary art and traces the trajectory of Japanese contemporary art from the postwar period to the present moment.

This exhibition traces the footprints of masters who led the Japanese contemporary art world, from artists who sought to reclaim Japan’s voice from the ruins of war in the immediate postwar period to today’s living artists who seek to represent the Japanese condition of the 21st century. It asks: how did Japanese contemporary artists relate to the art movement in Japan, how did they differentiate themselves from the West by integrating a distinctive Japanese sensibility into their work, and how did they create a “relationship with the world” as they culturally struggled and mediated between East and West? Against the feeling of being “lost in translation” or in partaking in extreme cultural voyeurism when thinking about Japan, this exhibition presents Japanese contemporary art from the postwar period as a uniquely Japanese aesthetic approach to contemporary art which is both localized and globally meaningful, continuously inspiring and influencing artists in Japan and the world.
