Arts Council Shizuoka has been introducing "Chourei Geijutsu" (art by the elderly), a term that refers to artistic expression by the elderly who continue to create their own original works even at an advanced age.

As part of the East Asia Culture City 2023 Shizuoka Prefecture program, we are pleased to present the first large-scale exhibition of this art form. In addition to the elderly artists in Shizuoka Prefecture whom we have been interviewing and discovering, we will also present to the world the artistic expressions of elderly people who continue to create art in various parts of Japan without being known to the public.

All of those exhibited at the exhibition are people who have not studied art professionally and continue to create unique, self-taught works of art. The exhibition will showcase over 1,500 works by 22 groups of very old artists from all over Japan. In addition, related events by experts and an exhibition on the Metaverse (scheduled to open in December) will allow visitors to experience the artistic expression of the elderly.
