The Celebrated Swords of Kishu Toshogu Shrine

Wakayama Prefectural Museum
Finished
At the beginning of the Edo period, in the 7th year of the Genwa era (1621), Yorinobu Tokugawa (1602-1671), the first lord of the Kii Tokugawa clan, erected the Kishu Toshogu Shrine in Wakaura. Including the modern heads of the clan, most of the successive lords of the Kii Tokugawa clan have always dedicated renowned swords to this shrine.

In this special exhibition, all the swords dedicated by the successive lords and heads of the Kii Tokugawa clan to the Kishu Toshogu Shrine will be thoroughly reexamined based on new insights. The results will be showcased alongside splendid sword mountings, sword fittings, and ancient documents and records from the Edo period to the modern era related to the management and preservation of swords.
