The Beginning of Adding Engines to Bonito Single Fishing Boats! Originating from Ise-Ichikawa Shipyard

Toba Sea-Folk Museum
Finished
Ise City's Ominato has long been known as a shipbuilding town, but not many are aware that the first motorized fishing boat in Japan, the 'Fujimaru,' and Mie Prefecture's first motorized fishing boat, the 'Nantoumaru,' were built between Meiji 39 (1906) and 41 (1908). This special exhibition showcases drawings and photographic materials related to bonito single fishing boats left by the former Ichikawa Shipyard, which continued to build numerous ships in Ominato from the Edo period, during the Genroku era (1688-1703), until around 1978. By displaying materials related to the 'Fujimaru,' which had a significant impact on bonito fishing throughout Japan, the pioneering 'Nantoumaru' in the prefecture's bonito fishing boats, and other bonito fishing boats built at the Ichikawa Shipyard, the exhibition aims to deepen understanding of the beginning and development of the motorization of fishing boats.
