The Beauty of Change in Calligraphy

Showa Museum
Finished
This exhibition explores the theme of "change," showcasing a range of calligraphy styles. It features the refined kana script of the Heian period, the dynamic brushwork of the Nanbokucho to Edo periods, and the unique ink traces created by Zen monks. The art of kana calligraphy and cursive script avoids repetitive patterns by employing diverse lines and ink colors. Today, appreciating renowned calligraphy involves savoring these variations in brushstrokes, character shapes, and spacing. The exhibition presents traditional Japanese aesthetics that celebrate change, complemented by seasonal tea utensils and paintings.
