Tetsuya Umeda "Wait This is My Favorite Part"

Watari-um, The Watari Museum of Contemporary Art
Finished

Artists

Tetsuya Umeda
The Watari-um Museum will hold its first-ever exhibition that resembles a performance.

Tetsuya Umeda has, up until now, presented a series of works, including the roaming solo exhibition "Age-0" (2014) and "Nyufune" (2015~), where he travels night waterways on a boat, in various locations. The Watari-um Museum's first solo exhibition, "Wait This is My Favorite Part," focuses on the Watari-um Museum itself, established as a private museum in September 1990, as part of a tour-style exhibition.

The exhibited works are created with a focus on the architectural aspects of the Watari-um Museum, and, as part of the tour, rooms that have never been used as exhibition spaces before will be opened to the public. This exhibition will also be a theatrical performance held in the Watari-um Museum. The audience will be guided by the cast members' actions who appear at various points during the tour, as they explore the exhibition rooms and backstage areas, encountering devices that transform everyday scenes. The tour, lasting about 50 minutes, with small groups departing at staggered times, will intersect the timeline of the act of viewing with the traces of actions etched in the building from before the museum's construction.
