Tessai Tomioka
The year 2024 marks the 100th anniversary of the death of Tessai Tomioka (1836-1924), one of the greatest intellectual giants of modern Japan and a literati painter. Tessai was born in Kyoto into a family that valued learning, and from a young age, he became familiar with the Japanese and Chinese classics and various studies.

The dynamism of Tomioka's brush strokes, the inscriptions on his paintings, and the variety of motifs in his works today give us a picture of Tomioka in a variety of ways that cannot be described from a single perspective, and give us a clear picture of his life and work. This exhibition will display Tomioka's works of calligraphy and painting, mainly from the museum's collection, which were produced through his extensive learning and friendship, and will showcase his vigorous and diverse artistic activities throughout his life.
