Terracotta Warriors and Ancient China: Heritage from Qin and Han Dynasty

Nagoya City Museum
Finished
In 221 B.C., Qin Shi Huangdi, the first emperor to establish a unified dynasty in Chinese, brought to an end the 550-year-long Warring States period, which had been dominated by rival kingdoms. Although the Qin dynasty fell within a dozen years, the terracotta warriors and horses that lie in the tomb of the First Qin Emperor are a modern reminder of the emperor's immense power.

In 202 B.C., Liu Bang of the Han Dynasty defeated Huang Yu of the Western Chu Dynasty to reunify China, and the Han Dynasty inherited the Qin state system and established a golden age.

Why did the small terracotta warriors created during the Warring States period suddenly become life-size terracotta warriors at the Mausoleum of the First Emperor, and why did they become small again during the Han Dynasty? This exhibition will explore the mysteries of ancient Chinese history through approximately 200 pieces of artifacts excavated in present-day Shaanxi Province, the central region of the Qin and Han dynasties, including the first-ever display in Japan of Chinese national first-class artifacts (an original Chinese classification for the highest class of valuables).
