Taro Okamoto
Triumphant Return! The Taro Okamoto Collection has returned from a large-scale traveling exhibition held in three cities in Japan (Osaka, Tokyo, and Aichi) from 2022 to 2023. The related program that accompanied the exhibition has been a hot topic of conversation, and the exhibition will make a "triumphant return" to its hometown of Kawasaki, amid renewed interest from a wide range of generations, from children to adults.

Taro Okamoto was born to parents Ippei Okamoto, a cartoonist, and Kanoko Okamoto, a novelist. His studies in not only art but also philosophy and ethnology at the University of Paris formed the axis of Okamoto's later thought. After serving in the war against his will, Okamoto resumed his creative activities in Japan after the war's defeat, but he went far beyond being a painter, creating murals and monuments, participating in various art movements, getting involved in design and architecture, conducting interviews and photography throughout Japan, writing numerous books and appearing in the media, and engaging in a wide range of other activities.

Okamoto has left a broad and multifaceted footprint. The Tower of the Sun, which is synonymous with Okamoto, not only served as the theme pavilion for the 1970 Osaka World's Fair but is also a symbol of Japan's period of rapid economic growth and an icon that is still familiar to people beyond time.

This exhibition will once again showcase the appeal of Taro Okamoto in both the permanent and temporary exhibition spaces throughout the entire museum. In addition to his popular masterpieces, the exhibition will include previously unseen materials such as industrial designs for furniture and goods, drawings that support the creative process, and photographs that highlight Okamoto's ethnographic viewpoint. In conjunction with the summer vacation, worksheets for children will be distributed and they can enjoy sketching in the exhibition room.
