Taro Chiezo
Parcel is pleased to announce the exhibition of Taro Chiezo, featuring paintings and sculptures from the 90s to recent works in our two gallery spaces. This will be Taro Chiezoʼs first exhibition in Tokyo in 15 years, with a central focus on paintings.
"War/Pink is Color of Blood" (1996) is a pioneering work by the artist, which will be unveiled in Japan for the first time. Originally displayed at Sandra Geringʼs gallery in New York, this work also graced the halls of museums in Virginia and Ohio. The artwork was also included in the highly acclaimed "Presumed Innocence" exhibition in 1998, which featured the works of renowned artists such as Mike Kelley, Paul McCarthy, and Joyce Pensato. The painting is a testament to the artist's exceptional vision and unparalleled creativity, wherein the juxtaposition of anime robots and rangers against Turner's "The Shipwreck" serves as a symbolic reflection of 21st-century warfare, wherein drones are deployed to bomb the earth.
Alongside seminal works such as "Father and Son II Schipol Airport" (1999), unveiled at his solo exhibition at Sandra Gering's gallery in 1999 and later at the "Taro vs Taro" exhibition at the Taro Okamoto Museum of Art in 2009, this exhibition will showcase new paintings that incorporate penguins as motifs and pieces that reimagine and merge select works from the 1990s. This display will offer a compelling glimpse into the artist's evolution and creative innovation over time.
In his book "Why the World Does Not Exist", philosopher Markus Gabriel posits that both physical objects and unicorns exist and that we are entities that pass through countless layers of the meanings of existence and fiction. Taro Chiezo expressed this idea through his paintings two decades ago. The innovative quality of Taro's paintings from the 1990ʼs persists in his new works, which feature penguins that have been depicted repeatedly in Hollywood animation and in the anime series "Mawaru Penguindrum" (2011). Taro paints the penguins as symbolic representations of ourselves, appearing as a part of our collective psyche. In recent years, it has become more commonplace to project subcultures such as anime, manga, and games onto works of contemporary art. The "Superflat" movement has firmly established itself, and many post-internet and post-SNS generation artists choose such topics for their works, as they are familiar aspects of everyday life. Through this exhibition, Parcel reflects on the influence that Taro Chiezo has had on the contemporary art world by presenting his past works alongside his new paintings. This exhibition provides a unique opportunity to explore Taro's artistic practice, and we invite all to delve into its depths.
