Isaac Julien, originally from the Caribbean island of Saint Lucia, and a graduate of St. Martin's School of Art in London, was one of the pioneers in the mid-1980s among British filmmakers who used video as a medium for social activism and as a means to convey counter-discourse during the Margaret Thatcher administration in the UK. Introducing perspectives from the Black and Asian diaspora into the cultural discourse of Britain, they were influenced by central figures in cultural studies such as sociologist Stuart Hall, while addressing themes such as race, ethnicity, post-colonialism, gender, and sexuality in their works. He was nominated for the Turner Prize in 2001 and won the Jury Prize at the KunstFilmBiennale in Cologne, Germany, in 2003. He was awarded the Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2017 and was knighted in 2022. The retrospective exhibition "What Freedom Is To Me" held at Tate Britain in 2023 received high acclaim.
