Artists

Tadaoto Kainosho
Tadaoto Kainosho (1894-1978) was a Japanese-style painter from the Taisho era (1912-1926) to the early Showa era (1926-1989) and produced a series of ambitious works as a member of the "Kokuga Sosaku Kyokai," a group that introduced innovative Japanese painting expression to the world. However, although he was highly acclaimed in the prewar art world, he stopped painting around 1940 and moved into the film industry. For a long time, the full scope of his work went unnoticed.

This exhibition is the first full-scale retrospective of Kainosho's work at a museum in Tokyo in 26 years, since 1997. All of Kainosho's work and materials will be equally exhibited, including the bewitching paintings that have been known until now and the scrapbooks, photographs, sketchbooks, videos, film costumes, posters, and more.
