This exhibition will focus on the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum's extensive collection of works and materials related to the history of film and photography, introducing the devices that made "peering" possible, the images created by these devices, and the diverse expressions of artists whose imaginations were expanded through “peering."

The camera invented as a device for taking photographs and videos, is also a device for peering. The camera obscura, the prototype of the camera, was a device in which a pinhole was drilled in one wall of a dark box to capture a view of the outside world. There were once visual devices that were inverted versions of the camera obscura, in which the viewer looked through the lens to see the picture. These were collectively called "peep shows," and various forms were invented to make them viable as entertainment.

Variations of peep shows include optical instruments such as microscopes and telescopes, stereoscopes, and machines that create moving pictures such as kinetoscopes. The invention and popularity of these diverse devices have encouraged the birth of new, as yet unseen images and have given birth to countless expressions.

This exhibition explores the genealogy of the "peering" gaze that has been handed down to the present day from the collections of the Museum of Photography.
