YOD Gallery is pleased to present Stitch Dog's second solo exhibition, “handiwork and electronic”.
The act of sewing has often been devalued as a “handicraft” in art history and art criticism, partly based on the argument that it has functioned as a structure to marginalize women from the social and political spheres. The artist intentionally incorporates motifs derived from technology that became widespread in the 1980s, such as personal computers and electronic hardware, which were predominantly used by men at the time. This approach critically responds to the historical context in which the act of “sewing” has long been positioned as a domain of handicraft, particularly as a symbol of women's labor. In the "iPad Broken Display Series", broken iPads are dismantled and flattened through embroidery, visualizing the temporality of digital technology and the collapse of physical form. Although these electronic devices are destined to deteriorate and lose their shape, by being visualized and recorded through thread, they are elevated to a form of existence that can persist beyond their temporality. In this process, the artist attempts to resist social oppression and the gendered norms embedded in “handicrafts. She also practices tethering and memorizing with threads as proof of her socially marginalized and potentially forgettable existence. This act of production is not only a resistance against material deterioration and disappearance, but also means that the artist's own proof of existence will continue to be preserved in cultural and historical memory. The artist will be at the gallery on:October 12. We hope you will take this opportunity to visit this exhibition.
