The performance platform Stilllive is committed to theoretical and practical reflection on performance and knowledge production around various issues of the body in Stilllive Studies 2025: Interdisciplinary Performance. In 2023, which builds on the experience of interdisciplinary collaboration Stilllive has cultivated since its first edition in 2019, and opens up a space for learning about performance. During the course of the programs, a total of 16 programmes were organised in which several artists drew on their own experiences to explore in depth issues such as urban, political, gender and community issues together with participants. This year's Stilllive Studies program invited artists who have developed multifaceted activities by researching knowledge and methods not only in the arts, but also in various fields such as martial arts, games, history and cuisine, to explore the interdisciplinary possibilities of performance through an experiential program including talks and workshops.

#0 Yuki Kobayashi / Overseas Residency Debriefing Session
Dates: 2024.02.08 (Sat) 15:00-16:30
Admission Fee: Free(Reservation only, maximum 10 people)
Interviewer : Sanghae Kwon (Curator, Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo)

Artist Yuki Kobayashi began training ‘Wing Chun’ in Kyoto from November 2019 and was awarded a 2024 Asian Cultural Council (ACC) Individual Fellowship in Visual Arts for a six-month residency in Hong Kong and mainland China to train and research Wing Chun. In the process, he reinterpreted the ideas of the female founder of Wing Chun and found a queering perspective on gender, power and physicality in contemporary male-centric martial arts. As a body-mediated performance artist, he has explored the history of war and colonial rule in East Asia, which is closely related to the development of Wing Chun, traditional styles in hairstyle and dress, and the meaning of learning to fight and defend oneself in contemporary society. In this debriefing session, Kobayashi will share his experiences in Hong Kong during the fellowship and at The Watermill Center residency in New York, with demonstrations by Kobayashi himself.

In 2024, during his research activities in Hong Kong, he was certified as a Wing Chun Master (Sifu) by both the "Yuan Yen Keung Ving Tsun Martial Arts Association”, where he was staying, and the “Ving Tsun Athletic Association”, which was first established in Hong Kong in 1967, and he has expanded his career as a martial artist. In this workshop, based on the concepts of Wing Chun, the representative bills and the foundational ‘Siu Lim Tao’ and “Chi Sao” that we have learnt so far, participants will have the opportunity to experiment with physical interrelationships with each other and find common ground with performance art.
