Specialties - Venerable Treasures

The Tokugawa Art Museum
Finished
From the Muromachi period (1333-1573) onward, famous masterpieces, mainly tea ceremony utensils and swords came to be called “meibutsu" (masterpieces). The criteria for “meibutsu" included not only the attractiveness of the item itself and its renown but also the fact that it had been owned by historical figures, such as warlords and tea masters like Sen no Rikyu. The historical endorsement of a work of art, or a masterpiece, has a significant impact on the evaluation of contemporary artwork.

This exhibition will focus on tea ceremony utensils and swords from the collection of the Owari Tokugawa family, showing several famous masterpieces and tracing their development.
