Special Exhibition Yamato-e: Traditions of Beauty from the Imperial Court

Tokyo National Museum
Finished
Yamato-e was established in the early Heian period (794-1185), and since then it has undergone various changes and has been painted continuously. Although often associated with elegance and delicacy, Yamato-e was also an extremely open-minded and ambitious subject that continued to surprise people by greedily incorporating the most advanced modes of each era. Inheritance of tradition and innovation. The aesthetic practice of constantly striving for new creations is the essence of Yamato-e.

This exhibition introduces a selection of outstanding Yamato-e works from the Heian to Muromachi periods, which were created over more than 1,000 years, and which, while inheriting the essence of the imperial beauty, have always been innovative. These gorgeous works, which can be called "textbooks of Japanese art," provide a comprehensive look back at the magnificent history of Yamato-e.
