Heihachiro Fukuda (1892-1974) pursued expressions through innovative colors and shapes. His unique style, brimming with design sensibility, continues to captivate many people to this day. To mark the 50th anniversary of Fukuda’s passing in 2024, the museum will hold an exhibition for the first time in 12 years, showcasing all the Fukuda works in our collection and reflecting on his artistic career.

Heihachiro Fukuda studied at the Kyoto City School of Arts and Crafts and the Kyoto Municipal School of Painting starting in 1911. After his first acceptance into the Imperial Art Exhibition in 1919, he primarily exhibited at official art shows. During this period, he focused on “the beauty of minutiae,” showcasing a delicate style with meticulous detail. However, his style underwent a significant change after his first visit to China in 1928, where he encountered the vast natural landscapes unseen in Japan. Around 1930, he joined the Rikuchokai, a group of artists from various genres and organizations, and began to pursue innovative colors and forms, transitioning into a colorist.

This exhibition will trace the evolution of his style, displaying works from his early to late periods, including notable pieces from the Taisho era such as "Peonies," the novel combination of the design-like bamboo leaves and realistic bamboo shoots in "Bamboo Shoots," and the strikingly cropped "Poppy Flowers."

Additionally, Fukuda was deeply influenced by the Rimpa school, evident in the compositions and design-oriented expressions of his works. The exhibition will feature Rimpa works that captivated Fukuda, such as "Makifuku-zu" attributed to Tawaraya Sotatsu, Sakai Hoitsu's "Autumn Grasses and Quail" [Important Art], and Suzuki Kiitsu’s "Flowers and Birds of the Four Seasons." Furthermore, we will introduce masterpieces influenced by the Rimpa school by renowned modern and contemporary artists.

In this milestone year marking the 50th anniversary of Fukuda’s passing, we invite you to revisit his artistic career and enjoy the beauty of the Rimpa school that enchanted him, along with design-rich masterpieces by modern and contemporary artists.
