Special 25th Memorial Exhibition: Kaii Higashiyama and Summer in Japan

Yamatane Museum of Art
Until Sep 23

Artists

Kaii Higashiyama
Throughout the seasons, Kaii Higashiyama (1908–1999) engaged in a dialogue with nature, painting various landscapes from the sea and mountains to the old towns. His works, rich in poetic sentiment, continue to be loved by people even after a quarter-century since his passing.

Now, the Yamane Art Museum will showcase all of Higashiyama's works in its collection, presenting landscape paintings brimming with seasonal sensations. Furthermore, a special exhibition will be held, selecting masterpieces themed around summer from ukiyo-e to modern and contemporary Japanese paintings, featuring exquisite pieces that evoke a sense of coolness.

Of particular note is the masterpiece "Rising Tide," spanning over 9 meters, which combines the universal image of the Japanese sea with the decorative elements of traditional Japanese painting. This exceptional work, commissioned by the museum's inaugural director (Shuji Yamazaki) as a counterpart to Higashiyama's representative piece housed in the Imperial Palace's New Palace, is sure to captivate attention.

Additionally, another highlight is the series "Four Seasons of Kyoto," in which Higashiyama elegantly depicted the elegance of Kyoto and the changing seasons, inspired by the words of the writer Yasunari Kawabata.

In this exhibition, alongside "Rising Tide," which portrays the dynamic seas with whitecaps, there will be refreshing works such as "Summer Sea" by Taikan Yokoyama, depicting Japan's sea and the silvery moon, and "Fireflies" by Shoen Uemura, capturing the fleeting moment of a woman in a blue yukata.
