Shuji Nakagawa
Shuji Nakagawa operates studios in Kyoto and Shiga, where he apprenticed under his father, Seiji Nakagawa, a holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property status. He inherits traditional woodworking techniques such as barrel-making, crafting items like bathtubs, and sake vessels that highlight the beauty of unfinished wood, integrating forms that blend seamlessly into contemporary lifestyles. He has also collaborated on numerous products and his works are housed in institutions such as the V&A Museum in London and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris.

In addition to his craftsmanship, Nakagawa utilizes his sensibilities nurtured in art school to actively engage not only in the field of woodworking but also in the world of contemporary art. He has created many works, held solo exhibitions in cities like Paris and New York, and continues to receive acclaim both domestically and internationally.

In his exhibition, Nakagawa will construct spaces using installation artworks made from unconventional tea leaves and branches discarded during the tea production process. Starting from traditional woodworking techniques, Nakagawa expands beyond conventional boundaries, exploring possibilities and presenting new challenges.
