Shozo Shimamoto
The Yoshiaki Inoue Gallery presents Shozo Shimamoto (1928-2013), a founding member of the Gutai Art Association and well-known for his daring performances.

Shozo Shimamoto was born in Osaka in 1928. While attending Kwansei Gakuin University, he studied under Jiro Yoshihara. Shimamoto created a piece titled "Hole," which involved making holes in a canvas made from newspaper, earning high praise from Yoshihara for its novelty. He participated in the founding of the Gutai Art Association in 1954. At the second Gutai Outdoor Art Exhibition in 1956, he created the "Cannon Painting," which involved packing paint-filled bags into an iron pipe and firing them using acetylene gas. Later, this evolved into "Bottle Throwing," where he would throw bottles filled with paint onto a canvas. Among the pioneering performances by the Gutai members, Shimamoto's were the most extreme. This exhibition features 12 works of "Hole" on the second floor and 5 works of "Bottle Throwing" on the third floor.
