Shoji Ueda
The title of this exhibition, "My Landscape," comes from a series called "Scenes of Landscapes" (1979-83), which Shoji Ueda used when he published it in a camera magazine. In the magazine, Ueda wrote the following: "Themes are said to be important in photography. For me, 'everyday life' itself is the theme, so I don't feel the need to be particularly ambitious about it. This is fine as it is." It becomes clear when Ueda photographs landscapes that he is not particularly fixated on picturesque locations or aiming for dramatic moments. It seems that Ueda's "landscape photographs" capture ordinary moments and "everyday life" with a distinctive "gaze." This is not limited to Ueda's work from the 1970s to the 1980s but is a universal characteristic seen in Utada's work from before the war as well. However, the series "Matsue" from the 1960s may feel slightly different from Ueda's other landscapes. This could be because the publication plan preceded the shooting, and there was a strong consciousness of recording or depicting "old-fashioned things" in this series. Nevertheless, Ueda's unique perspective and composition can be felt here and there, making it an ambitious series.

This exhibition will introduce rarely exhibited color landscape photographs from the 1970s, as well as the series "Scenes of Landscapes," various landscape works from before the war to the 1970s, and the series "Matsue."
