Shida Kuo
This is Shida Kuo's first solo exhibition at Sokyo Atsumi, following two solo exhibitions in 2014 and 2017.

Born in Taiwan, Kuo graduated from New York University in 1992 and is based in New York while teaching at the same university. Using ceramic and wood as materials, Kuo's simple and warm works pursue the essential "forms" that have been etched into cells since time immemorial.

Underlying Kuo's work is the question, "Why do people of different origins and backgrounds respond to certain forms and materials in the same way?” This is related to the fact that Kuo was born in Taiwan and has lived for many years in New York, a city with diverse values.

Kuo's sculptures are known for their organic and geometric forms, which are inspired by primitive art, ancient tools, and ancestral lifestyles, as well as his interest in the relationship between line, form, and space. Kuo's gaze eventually transcends time and space to the human race as a whole. Through the physical act of creation, Kuo reconsiders the meaning of materials such as earth and wood, which have been used by humans since primitive times.

In this exhibition, Kuo will present 24 works, mainly three-dimensional works created before and after the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as two-dimensional works. Kuo states that each work has its own life and is not necessarily related to each other like a series. In recent years, he has developed an interest in creating wooden pedestals that are integrated with the work and often incorporates them into his pieces. A wooden leg or pedestal may appear to be part of the sculpture. The loose solidarity between objects, such as ceramic and wood, is what Kuo envisions for his art.

The sleek forms that characterize Kuo's work respond to each other, creating an architectural space. In this exhibition, Kuo's works will be calmly placed in a white cube space.
