Seto Modern Ceramics

Seto City Art Museum
Finished
The production of porcelain in Seto is said to have begun in the later years of the Edo period. In Seto village, the transition from pottery to porcelain production started in the first year of the Kyowa era (1801) when 16 individuals, including Kato Karasaburō and Kato Kichizaemon, switched from pottery to porcelain production. By the fourth year of the Bunka era (1807), Kato Tamakichi brought back porcelain manufacturing techniques from Kyushu, leading to an expansion of production. While kilns were initially managed under the protection of the domain, with oversight of the production quantity of ceramic products, the Meiji Restoration led to the abolition of the domain system and kiln stock system. This allowed kilns to engage in free competition for ceramic production, gradually revitalizing their businesses.

This exhibition will showcase 48 pieces of Seto ceramics from the Meiji era that received high acclaim internationally. These ceramics, created with cutting-edge technology of the time, will introduce the charm of Seto ceramics that were once proudly showcased to the world.
