Sense of Wonder

Shizuoka Prefectural Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Yayoi Kusama, Lee Ufan, Kazuo Shiraga, Claude Lorrain, Kinosuke Ebihara, Claude Joseph Vernet et al.
This exhibition is based on the concept of enjoying artworks through the five senses. Most works of art are primarily visual in nature. This exhibition invites visitors to appreciate the materials, motifs, and subjects of artworks more deeply by working directly with the senses other than sight (touch, hearing, smell, and taste), by recalling memories of past sensory experiences, and by imagining things they have not experienced with their five senses. In her best-selling book of the same name, author and marine biologist Rachel Carson wrote of the joy of discovering nature through a "sense of wonder." With the spread of the Internet and digital media, people are now able to experience art in an easy and accessible way.

Conversely, this exhibition aims to allow visitors to enjoy and feel the reality of the Shizuoka Prefectural Museum of Art's richly diverse collection, from old Western paintings to the latest works of art, through the human senses.
