Seitaro Iki
Pieces is a collection of photographic and video works centered around the theme of personal reflection and sharing regarding life, achieved by observing and revisiting past events encountered. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Seitaro Iki moved to Arita Town, Saga Prefecture, in 2021, following an encounter with a fellow patient in his hospital room. This move led him to document the transformation of a type of stone called "ceramic stone," which is extracted from the mountains. As human hands shape it, the stone continuously changes, evolving into various forms and images, often becoming functional pottery. At the same time, Ikki has also captured the activities of the people involved in these processes. Surrendering to the effects of this experience, while sometimes struggling, allowed Ikki to introspect on his own existence, intertwining it with the natural material of the "ceramic stone" and the man-made "pottery." It also led to a deeper reflection on the unconscious boundaries and images accumulated over time in life. For this exhibition, Ikki has chosen to present these experiences as a coordinate point, blending photographs from both before and after this pivotal moment in time, without being constrained by temporal or spatial limitations. Through this act of photography, he attempts to create a perception of certainty and uncertainty regarding life, while also exploring the possibility of fostering new connections in the future.
