Kyoto Seika University Gallery Terra-S is pleased to present “Seika Artist File #2: Wanderings in Seven Imagined Sceneries,” a group exhibition that utilizes the characteristics of the gallery space and introduces university graduates and faculty members who work as artists.

Based on the titular theme of imagined scenery, the second “Seika Artist File” exhibition features seven artists: Ishihara Yo, Kishi Eiko, Sagawa Koji, Alina Zhdanova, Takahara Shuhei, Nishimura Ryo, and Yamamoto Rieko.

Ishihara Yo’s painting practice visualizes the unconscious gaze of the individual and explores dialogue with others. Known for her saiseki zogan (stone-painting damascening) technique, Kishi Eiko makes original, geometrically shaped ceramic works. Sagawa Koji has consistently pursued a form of postmodernist painting using colored surfaces, lines, and geometric shapes as motifs. Alina Zhdanova engages with a viewer’s memory through videos works that depict discussions of everyday life and memories. Out of his interactions with nature, Takahara Shuhei limns a single abstract painting as if weaving together various landscapes and his impressions of them. Nishimura Ryo has spent time in various places, engraving the fluidity of natural objects and immense passage of time as “lines” on prints. Yamamoto Rieko focuses on the relationships and boundaries between images, employing a wide range of techniques to create paintings with a resonant figure and ground.

Although the exhibited works cannot be described as “imagined sceneries” alone, they all embody the landscapes, thoughts, and memories conjured up in the minds of the artists. How do the participating artists pay attention to, explore, and regularly reflect on their relationships with the world around them? We hope that viewers, as they wander around the seven exhibition rooms, encounter new perspectives and values through the imagined sceneries the artists weave together.
