To commemorate the opening of its new space, Art Space Fukujuen Gallery will hold the solo exhibition "Chabana-Raisan" by contemporary artist Sayaka Toda. Toda has been exploring the relationship between the natural environment, the plants native to each location, the interaction between plants and people, and the culture/traditions associated with them, expressing her findings through her unique artistic vision.

In her concept of "ugly beauty," she explores the various expressions of beauty and recognizes a process within the ugliness of nature that holds the essence of beauty. In pursuit of this perspective, she held a solo exhibition titled "Sleeping in the Land of Overgrown Weeds" at Kana Kawanishi Gallery in 2023. During this exhibition, she combined paintings and photographs in her display, pioneering new territory as an artist and receiving high praise.

All the works presented at Art Space Fukujuen are new pieces. Through fieldwork in tea plantations, Toda has visited tea farms multiple times, studying the process from the plantation to the tea reaching your hands, with a particular focus on the blossoming of tea flowers. She highlights the delicate and beautiful nature of tea flowers, which are often disregarded because their full bloom during the tea leaf production process leads to a decline in the tea's taste and flavor. These delicate flowers, naturally occurring during the plant's growth, are forcibly removed by human hands.

Discovering the beauty within this transience, Toda expresses the essence of tea flowers through paintings and installations.

During her stay at Manpuku-ji Temple, a Zen Buddhist temple of the Obaku sect in Uji, in the autumn of 2022, Toda received a giant jar as a gift from the temple's sub-temple, Shishin-in. Her fieldwork in pursuing nature, which began at Manpuku-ji Temple, is an extension of her research into tea plantations. She incorporates the new knowledge acquired there into her paintings and three-dimensional works.
