Fugensha is pleased to announce the solo exhibition of Sarah Fujiwara titled, “Photograph: Scattered Memories in the Field of Transience” to be held from March 28 (Friday) to April 20 (Sunday), 2025. This exhibition is a celebration of the publication of [Photograph: Scattered Memories in the Field of Transience] (Standard Works), which is the archive of exhibition that shares the same name held at the Yamazaki Mazak Museum of Art in April 2024.

Sarah Fujiwara is a contemporary artist born in Tsushima City, Aichi Prefecture. Having worked in the field of commercial photography, Fujiwara entered the art world in 1997, after her works were acquired by the Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts. Since then, she has created works using various techniques and media to expand the possibilities of photographic expression, exhibiting her work both domestically and internationally. In recent years, she published the work collection [Melting Petals] and in 2022, and in 2024, she held a large-scale solo exhibition titled "Photograph: Flower of Memories Sarah Fujiwara" at the Yamazaki Mazak Museum of Art. From February to April 2025, she also exhibited "Timeless Colors" at Matsuzakaya Nagoya.

The newly published work collection “Photograph: Scattered Memories in the Field of Transience” consists of five series created between 2006 and 2024, with motifs of lotus, rose, and poppy. These include early works such as “Flow”, which captures the waterways of her hometown's lotus fields, “Neuma”, featuring lotus stems that withered after the Great East Japan Earthquake, and “La vie en rose”, which depicts the vivid petals of blooming roses. Additionally, her signature series “Melting Petals” consists of photographs of poppy fields in southwestern France, photographing them again with different lighting and techniques such as "blurring" and "delaminating."

This exhibition will primarily focus on “Uncovered Present”, the most recent work in the collection, which is featured at the end of the book. Created post COVID-19 pandemic, it represents the inner struggles and impulses of life that could not be contained within the memory-based imagery expressed in “Melting Petals”, for “Uncovered Present” ink is removed just before it solidifies on the paper, exposing the inner layer and its state.

The works, which can be seen as a self-portrait of Sarah Fujiwara herself in the flow of time, reflecting both the past captured in photographic moments and the present, will be a unique and profound experience. We also hope you will enjoy the bold and elegant designed book by Satoshi Machiguchi, which brings the exhibition space of the Yamazaki Mazak Museum of Art to life.

On April 12 (Saturday), we will hold a gallery talk with Kazuko Sekiji, the Deputy Manager of the Planning Department at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo.
