Samurai Art: The Warrior Aesthetic of Feudal Japan

Tokyo Fuji Art Museum
Starts 10/12
Weapons and armor, including swords and suits of armor, were used in battle and treasured as symbols of martial prowess and family status and were regarded as objects of admiration. With the flourishing of advanced craftsmanship and samurai culture, weapons and armor such as swords underwent a uniquely Japanese evolution, and today they are often referred to as "Samurai Art." The cherished possessions of samurai passed down through generations are distinct from the everyday items used and lost; they reflect the samurai's aesthetic sense and the artisans' dedication, making them exquisite masterpieces. Additionally, battle scenes and warrior images depicted in historical paintings and military tales vividly portray samurai in full armor, wielding swords in combat. This exhibition, featuring items from the museum's collection, showcases swords, sword fittings, armor, helmets, and more, along with depictions of samurai in historical paintings, delving into the allure of "Samurai Art."
