Sakuji Yoshimoto "Pictorial Pilgrimage"

Artists

Sakuji Yoshimoto
In the field of art in the 1980s, the exhibition format of installations, which set the stage for space, thrived. In the midst of this, a group of representational paintings emerged, spinning "stories" on large screens. Riding the wave of "New Painting," an international trend that strongly emphasized the "reassertion of painting," artist Sakuji Yoshimoto (born in 1959 in Gifu Prefecture) made a striking debut in Nagoya. His large-scale works, characterized by powerful strokes with undulations, a profound texture, and contrasting graphical images or floating forms, garnered attention.

From the 1990s onwards, in search of new expressions, Yoshimoto repeatedly explored drawing, incorporating elements of "lines" from Chinese painting techniques. He also focused on the themes and compositions of European paintings since the Renaissance, transforming his expression to embody both tranquility and dynamism, transitioning towards allegorical subjects. Since 2005, he has served as a professor at Nagoya University of Arts, teaching courses on painting theory and practical techniques, contributing to the development of future artists from both theoretical and practical perspectives.

This exhibition introduces Yoshimoto's unique artistic journey, which is an indispensable aspect of understanding the development of Japanese contemporary art since the 1980s, through approximately 200 works of painting and drawing.
