Artists

Rosetsu Nagasawa
This is the first retrospective exhibition in Osaka, introducing the work of Rosetsu Nagasawa (1754 - 1799), who has been attracting attention both in Japan and abroad in recent years as one of the "painters of vision" along with Jakuchu Ito and Shohaku Soga.

Rosetsu Nagasawa was a painter active in Kyoto in the mid-Edo period and was a disciple of Okyo Maruyama, the founder of sketch painting. In addition to his outstanding descriptive ability, his eccentric ideas and bold compositions, as well as his spirit of service and interest in surprising and entertaining others, made him popular for developing his own unique world.

Nagasawa loved to paint and was always energetic in his pursuit of new expressions and techniques. Many of his masterpieces still fascinate viewers more than 200 years later. This exhibition brings together selected masterpieces from his early years to his later years, including his masterpiece "Fusuma (sliding door) with dragons and tigers" (Important Cultural Property), which is on display for the first time, to reveal the fascination of Rosetsu Nagasawa, a genius painter with an eccentric mindset.
