Artists

Riusuke Fukahori
Contemporary artist Riusuke Fukahori, captivated by a goldfish he kept in the year 2000 during his artistic slump, has continued to depict goldfish ever since. Using his unique technique called "2.5D Painting," where he layers acrylic paint on transparent resin without the use of paper or fabric, Fukahori creates three-dimensional goldfish that possess a realism and elegant beauty as if they are swimming with life in the water. He has been actively involved in his artistic pursuits, hosting a solo exhibition at The Ueno Royal Museum in 2022 and touring exhibitions across the country, starting in September 2023.

In this exhibition titled "Drawing of the Depths," Fukahori focuses on new works such as the representative series "Goldfish Sake" and paintings with artwork applied to frames. Additionally, he showcases drawing pieces, which are seldom presented, exploring the world where goldfish reside within the surface tension. In these drawings, created as if dropping colors onto the water's surface on watercolor paper, abstractly beautiful traces remain after the evaporation of moisture over time, differing from the three-dimensional reality.

The collection, crafted while traversing the boundaries between representation and abstraction, craftsman and artist, reveals the artist's challenging stance towards painting expression, employing diverse media and Fukahori's unique techniques.
