Jun Aoki
This exhibition commemorates the retirement of Jun Aoki, who taught for five years in the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts.

In Aoki's laboratory, first-year master's students have planned and practiced "temporary renovation exhibitions" every year, and this year's exhibition is an "extra edition" of the same theme, led by Aoki. The temporary renovation will take place in the Chenretsukan Building of the Tokyo University of the Arts.

Aoki has always believed that architecture is an imaginative approach to the environment that exists here and now and that it shakes the very foundation of existence. The environment in front of us, which at first glance appears to be solid, can be altered by the will of each individual, and by doing so, people can become “free." Aoki has always believed that the concept of architecture is broader than the mere creation of buildings and that it refers to such an approach to the environment.

Aoki has been trying to pass on the conceptual meaning of "architecture," which is the foundation of "architecture" in the practical sense, to future generations at the university.

The Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music Exhibition Hall was designed by Shinichiro Okada and built in 1929 as the university's exhibition space. Since then, numerous exhibitions have been held there, but this time, the exhibition hall itself will be "exhibited". The renovation as an exhibition, however, is not intended to transform it into a different exhibition hall using an installation. Rather, the goal is to discover, with a minimum of fiddling, latent qualities of space that are not usually considered as the backdrop to support an exhibition.

Architecture also aims to open up and spread to many people, as opposed to converging on a "work" that belongs to a particular individual. Therefore, for this exhibition, we have asked Atsumi Kikuchi, Kento Koganezawa, and Ryuji Nakamura, as well as our teaching and research assistants and first-year master's students, to join us in further layering the subject matter.
