Rei Nakanishi
Rei Nakanishi was born in Mie Prefecture in 1994. After working as a graphic designer, he currently lives and works in Susono, Shizuoka. From 2016 to 2019 he lived in the US and worked as an assistant to artist Meguru Yamaguchi. In 2022, he held a solo exhibition “Yue” (Dopness Art Lab) in Taipei, which was well received. This exhibition will be his first solo exhibition in Japan in about a year, since " Tree of Life" ( Diesel Art Gallery, Tokyo).
Nakanishi says that his experience in Susono, Shizuoka, where he moved to from Tokyo two years ago, played an important role in the creation of this exhibition. Being away from the hustle and bustle of the city and in an environment rich in nature has sharpened his senses as an artist and has brought about a significant change in him. On the other hand, it was also an opportunity for Nakanishi to listen to the part of himself that remains unchanged despite the changes in the environment, and to reevaluate his own artistic identity.
In this exhibition, Nakanishi will present five new works, including a large work measuring over 5 meters in width. All of these works are based on Nakanishi's signature motif of "flowers," but the artist's new challenge this time is to reinterpret and incorporate into his paintings floral still lifes painted by impressionist artists such as Van Gogh and Gauguin.
Nakanishi's artistic expression has been based on his experience as a graphic designer and his influences from various cultures such as street art, anime, and video games. In creating the paintings in this exhibition, Nakanishi will reflect on art history and apply motifs while looking back to the past, even though the paintings contain the atmosphere of these contemporaneous periods.
