Rei Naito
This fall, the Fondation d'entreprise Hermès will present Rei Naito's "Come and Live, Go and Live." Naito, whose work explores the question, "Is simply existing on this earth a blessing in itself?", connects the often-overlooked small things, scenes, and subtle, nearly imperceptible phenomena of daily life with the fleeting moments of light and shadow, water and air. She presents these as "scenes of fundamental life," offering viewers a profound experience.

This exhibition was conceived as a continuation of the similarly named exhibition currently on view at the Tokyo National Museum until September 23 (Monday, a public holiday). The two exhibitions will overlap in their exhibition periods and together form a large, encompassing circle. Unlike the Tokyo National Museum, which is steeped in history and houses numerous cultural artifacts from various eras, the Forum at Ginza Maison Hermès, located within a modern building, holds no such collection. The space, which floats in the heart of the city and may seem empty at first glance, is filled with natural light filtered through glass blocks, as well as artificial light and colors from the city. It is a place separated from the past.

In this space, Naito aims to evoke a transient yet intense gaze at life, using the shifting light to create an experience of "immersion in life."

The two consecutive venues are connected by paintings and sculptures. Particularly, the series of paintings titled "Color Beginning/Breath," created daily in the artist’s studio between 2023 and 2024, represent the irreversible nature of physical time and form a key narrative link between the two venues. The intimate moments and traces of pretend play that were woven into the time spent with Jomon-era clay artifacts and animal bones at the Tokyo National Museum, along with the memories from navigating through various exhibition rooms, form an intersection of time and space in this exhibition. Even though the exhibition periods do not entirely overlap, these elements create a transcendent harmony, revealed through the presence of people standing in the space or seated on the low platforms.
