Artists

Takuma Nakahira, Daido Moriyama
Takuma Nakahira (1938-2015) and Daido Moriyama (1938- ), two photographers who have left a significant and unique mark on the history of Japanese photography, met in the late winter of 1964 through the introduction of photographer Shomei Tomatsu. Nakahira, then a magazine editor, and Moriyama, who had just begun his career as a photographer, began to meet frequently because they were the same age and both lived in Zushi. The two deepened their relationship, stimulated each other, and sought their own unique photographic expression. Shuji Terayama invited them to publish their photographs in his magazine serials and became coworkers in the legendary " Provoke " photography magazine. This special relationship, in which they became aware of and provoked each other as unique comrades, continued until Nakahira died in 2015, and for Moriyama, the relationship continues today.

This exhibition is the first attempt to draw, confront, and examine their relationship over more than half a century - encounters, exchanges, collaborations, differences, crossings, repulsions, empathy, and awe - in a museum space. This is the first attempt of its kind. The exhibition will include rare magazines, photo books, and vintage prints from the 1960s to the 1980s, prints and videos produced especially for this exhibition, and works from the 2000s onward, all shot here in Hayama-Zushi and other locations in Kanagawa Prefecture, revealing their "provocative relationship" that has influenced art not only in Japan but also abroad. The exhibition will reveal the "provocative relationship" between the two artists that have influenced art in Japan and abroad.
