Professor Mori at the Lectern

Mori Ogai Memorial Museum
Finished
The literary giant Mori Ogai (1862–1922) took to the lectern upon his return from studying abroad. In 1888, he became an instructor at the Army Medical School, teaching hygiene, and in 1893, he became its principal. During this time, he also taught artistic anatomy at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts (now Tokyo University of the Arts, Faculty of Fine Arts) from 1891 and aesthetics and Western art history from 1896. From 1892, he served as a lecturer in aesthetics at Keio University. Starting his literary career around his graduation from the University of Tokyo, Mori ventured into writing while studying medicine, later going to Germany as an army physician and experiencing European culture. It was through these experiences that he was able to teach these subjects. His lectures concluded in 1899 due to his relocation to Kokura, but he continued to interact with faculty and students.

On the other hand, from 1908 (Meiji 41) to 1920, Mori was involved in compiling national textbooks for moral education and singing. Additionally, his works have been included in Japanese language and modern literature textbooks from his lifetime to the present day. Many people may have encountered Mori's novels for the first time in their textbooks.

This exhibition will showcase Mori's involvement in education through student notes, related materials, textbooks, and more.
