Portraits by Shoko Uemura, Atsushi Uemura, and Shoen Uemura

Shouhaku Art Museum
Until Dec 28

Artists

Shoko Uemura, Atsushi Uemura, Shoen Uemura
Not only was Shoen, who loved portrait painting since childhood and spent her life painting beautiful women, but Shoko and Atsushi, known for their bird-and-flower paintings, also created portraits. Shoko produced portraits during the pre-war period, inspired by the growth of his children as he drew subjects from his surroundings, and later created works influenced by his illustrations for Yasushi Inoue's "Queen Nukada." Atsushi remarked, "Only when one can entrust one's personality to flowers and birds can it truly be called a painting, which is why I've long felt the need to test myself by painting portraits." This exhibition presents the portraits of all three artists and the thoughts that accompanied their creations.
