Playing Dress-Up: Sewing Education for Girls with Small Kimonos

Museum of Beni
Finished
Since the Meiji era, continuing through the Taisho and pre-war Showa periods, girls learned household management through playing with dolls. Techniques and knowledge related to daily household chores such as sewing and washing were passed down from mothers to daughters through doll play.

This exhibition introduces small kimono, obi, and accessories used in dress-up play. Explore the traces of girls' domestic education from the period as glimpsed through these items.
